A timber garden structure with an open frame roof

Handmade timber pergolas

A timber pergola adds structure, shade and a real sense of destination to your garden — a place to sit, dine and entertain that looks better every year as the garden grows around it. Made to order from quality treated timber, not flat-packed kits.

What is a timber pergola?

A pergola is an open timber framework of upright posts supporting overhead beams and rafters, usually with an open or slatted roof. It defines an outdoor space and provides dappled shade without fully enclosing it, which makes it ideal for seating and dining areas, walkways and patios. Every pergola is made to order and built around your garden and how you want to use it — based in Rainford, St Helens and serving Wigan, Warrington, Lancashire, Merseyside and the wider North West.

Where we work

Our pergolas are handmade and installed by our own team across Wigan, Chorley, St Helens, Warrington, Preston, Southport, Bolton, Manchester and Skelmersdale.

"Everyone comments how beautiful and well built it is."

FAQs

Before you get in touch

Pergola or gazebo: which do you need?

It comes down to how much shelter you want. A pergola gives you an open, airy structure with partial shade, perfect for framing a patio or seating area and for climbing plants. A gazebo has a solid roof for full shelter from the rain.

Can a pergola have a roof?

We can add slatted or part-covered roofing and side screening if you want more shelter than an open frame gives you.

Do pergolas need planning permission?

Most fall under permitted development, depending on size, height and boundary distance. We check this at your free site survey.

Can the building go straight onto grass?

No — installing directly onto grass or soil isn't something we recommend or offer. It significantly shortens the building's lifespan and increases the risk of panels shifting or misaligning over time. A proper base makes all the difference.

Does a tanalised building need treating?

Tanalised timber is pressure-treated to protect against rot, but it isn't fully waterproof until an oil or paint has been applied. Since timber is porous, we'd always recommend an additional preservative to help it stand up to the weather.

Do you install everything yourselves?

We install the vast majority of our buildings ourselves, so nothing is outsourced and everything fits together the way it should. Collection-only and delivery-only options are also available if you'd rather install it yourself.
